Hope Is a Risk (Double Vinyl)

Fiercely swinging between the guttural rawness of grunge and the playful lushness of pop, “Hope is a Risk” is the ambitious 14 track debut LP of Latin-Australian outfit The Maggie Pills.

Led by Argentinian frontwoman Delfi Sorondo and Venezuelan drummer Mario Perez, “Hope is a Risk” reimagines punk through an emotionally visceral lens, jam-packed with impish latin percussions, razor-sharp guitars, fuzzy bass lines, unhinged synths and gestural vocals that feel playfully, pop and iconic. The result is an impressive self-produced album that masters the intersections between intuitive and mathematical, grunge and pop, gothic and colourful.

Self-produced by Mario Perez, the album seeks a sound outside of indie-rock, providing an atmospheric, wet and kaleidoscopic sound wall of cosmic proportions as an overall base for the LP. Mastered by legendary sound engineer Joe Carra (Amyl & The Sniffers, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, Courtney Barnett) “Hope is a Risk” is a unique addition to Australia’s indie-rock catalogue.

From nothing we come And nowhere we go From nothing we rise And nowhere we fall From nothing we come And nowhere we go Is it fear that keeps moving you back Is it just today’s world? Is the silence what swallows your tears Is it just your warm bed? The red clock is rushing everything but we like going fast This decision is not who we bring, it’s who we leave behind All that’s past all that is overcome will show you who we are No deny no forget no submit, no more I am the witch I am the bridge Nowhere we go Nowhere we go I am the witch I am the bridge No deny, no forget, no more No deny, no forget, no more No deny, no forget, no more No deny, no forget, no more, no more, no more Unbound From nothing we come And nowhere we go Is it fear that keeps moving you back Is it just today’s world? Is the silence what swallows your tears Is it just your warm bed? The bloom comes and there will be no clue of all the pain it bears Ancient wounds that are carried by blood cannot be sown away In the spirit of mandate is all that we are bound to break No deny, no forget, no submit, no more I am the witch I am the bridge Nowhere we go Nowhere we go I am the witch I am the bridge No deny, no forget, no more No deny, no forget, no more No deny, no forget, no more No deny, no forget, no more, no more, no more Unbound From nothing we come And nowhere we go From nothing we rise And nowhere we fall

Here we are, the time has come, the time has come Where we are, one same law, rules us all There’s no difference between you and me anymore Crushed by the grey deserts, death towers The light that’s left, touches us, all the same But it’s not enough, Not enough Not enough Anyway! Strings being pulled Strings being pulled Strings beings pulled And silence! Will the girl and the boy do whatever it’s needed In order to survive? You and I Here, meant to be Without doubt Here Here we are, the time has come, the time has come One same law, rules us all, rules us all! Massive destruction, corruption of the land We’re part of it all, holding hands as sisters and brothers being displaced in a big dance But it’s not enough, Not enough Not enough Anyway! Strings being pulled Strings being pulled And silence! Will the girl and the boy do whatever it’s needed In order to survive? You and I Here, meant to be Without doubt Here Eyes closed feel the void Eyes closed Here Eyes closed Without doubt

I’m sorry for not ticking all your boxes I’m doing my best I’m doing my best But who the fuck are you anyway? Hope is a risk Hope is a risk And who the fuck are you anyway? Playing heavy metal riffs! Playing metal heavy riffs! Am I your son? Am I your son? Am I your daughter instead? The world is pink and blue? The world is pink and blood? So do you just sing? Do you just sing? Are you the judge? Fuck off! Give me your living proof! Give me your living proof! I am the proof

I, who put my feet on this land, powerless and consumed by doubt You, the one that hoped to find relief in an careless empty body Now, we work this out between the two of us, leaving self-perceived injustices behind In search of the light I, who raze everything in my path without feeling it You, who saw the future and found that there was nothing left for us Left for us here We ride the night between the two of us, hunting grey shadows we left behind Away from the light What is the meaning of this bright light? If the clouds are closing in the sky I, who without joy, relished on the delirium You, possessed by war, touched by its reality Now, we go away under the moonlight We ride the night between the two of us, hunting red shadows we left behind Away from the light We ride the night between the two of us, hunting grey shadows we left behind Away from the light What is the meaning of this bright light? If the clouds are closing in the sky

Do you know how to be? how to be seen, how to be liked, how to appear? Do you recognize this? If what you see is not a part of it, then what do you see? This circles are closed It might be not good enough The world is heavy as they told you We don’t know it but they’re sure you’re not good enough Their empty values have a greater resonance These circle are closed We don’t belong All the damage, all the selfishness, stepping over our heads, and for what? and for what? and for what? Are we alone? And all the expectations and all the rules suddenly imposed by you must be complied, or the damage will come, and the circle will be closed And you’re the one who’s hurt, and you’re the one who’s hurt Are you alone? Their empty values have a greater resonance This circle is closed And we don’t belong We don’t belong All the damage, all the selfishness, stepping over our heads, and for what? and for what? and for what? Are we alone? Are we alone? And I told you, and I told you I don’t want to, I don’t want to I remember, I remember Are we alone? We don’t belong We don’t belong Call to action, call to action, call to action, call to action We don’t belong!

Helena 02:15
It’s hard to leave it all You wanted something woman And flew without looking back The sun shone on you for long You lived through so much I knew I had a friend when I saw myself in you You know that I am here, Do you see yourself in me? Chose to go, far again Hey, Trying to stop the pain It’s ok to feel this way You can go far away Tears stuck in your chest Giving love back to yourself Go away home again The feelings aren’t the same I knew I had a friend when I saw myself in you You know that I am here Do you see yourself in me? Chose to go, far again Hey, Trying to stop the pain It’s ok to feel this way You can go far away Tears stuck in your chest Giving love back to yourself Go away home again The feelings aren’t the same

Well 05:33
I start to shut my eyes Didn’t make it on time How long’s this supposed to last? Can’t hold it for much longer As I stare into her night Keep falling inside this nightmare When you tell the story right I start climbing out I fall, I go, I fall In that well What is there to overcome? My fear of dark I can’t bear her tender heart As a rock it takes me under At the bottom I’m alright Don’t really want to come back up When she calls my name at night I want to fall down I fall, I go, I fall In that well

The fire in me, where will it be? Will it be? We’ll wait and see… The fire in me, where will it be, where will it be? We’ll wait and see, the fire in me, we’ll wait and see How long it’s going to be lit, we’ll let it be, we'll let it be The fire in me, where will it be, we’ll wait and see Where does it lead? We’ll let it be, we’ll let it be The fire in me, where will it be We’ll wait and see We’ll let it bleed, we’ll let it bleed The fire in me, where will it be? Will it be? We’ll wait and see… The fire in me, where will it be, where will it be? We’ll wait and see, the fire in me, we’ll wait and see My tribe it is, the one I miss, we’ll let it be, we'll let it be The fire in me, where will it be, we’ll wait and see Where does it lead? I, I wanna believe We’ll let it be, we’ll let it be The fire in me, where will it be We’ll wait and see We’ll let it bleed, we’ll let it bleed

Half Light 06:28
In the half light you seemed half right In the daylight I felt differently In the daylight I felt differently You, check you in the mirror Oh, now you’ve dropped me in it C’mon… In the half light you seemed half bright Like a well-intentioned kind of guy Putting it right Under the streetlight No, I’m breaking You, check you in the mirror Oh, now you’ve dropped me in it You, check you in the mirror Oh, now you’ve dropped me in it You, check you in the mirror Oh, now you’ve dropped me in it C’mon… You, check you in the mirror Oh, now you’ve dropped me in it You, check you in the mirror Oh, now you’ve dropped me in it You, check you in the mirror Oh, now you’ve dropped me in it C’mon… There are so many things that we nearly do, and they don’t matter at all… Yeah, and then there are things that we nearly do that would change everything In the daylight… In the half light… In the daylight… In the half light… In the daylight… In the half light…

My mind runs true She battles silly cults Through wounds she speaks truths My mind bends fears Discomfort goes near She changes within you Awareness, full bloom In boundless dreams Flashy chrome crowns yields For preys and the oppressed Sure, why wouldn’t we breed? No precious end is near Seize the throne, oh what a pose New trends, I want those New trends, I want those We’ll be so raw
